Rejected WWF 9/11 Ad Shocks The World

No this is not a WWF wrestling advertisement, it’s the World Wildlife Fund, even the Undertaker had a little more sensitivity than this. This ad, featuring hundreds of planes flying into the direction of Manhattan, leaked online Tuesday. The conservation group quickly denied any involvement with the image and claimed it was a rejected spec. ad, which they had nothing to do with. The next day however, Ad Age reported that WWF Brazil did approve the ad, and ran it in a city newspaper. The image was quickly pulled by Sergio Valente, President of DDB Brasil, the ad agency who produced the spot. There was also a video version created, but DDB Brasil claims they had no involvement with it. All video was taken off YouTube due to copyright claims by, yup you guessed it, DDB Brasil, LIARS! Luckily the video spread fast enough and is still viewable.

Below is the video of that ad, watch at your own risk, pretty intense. The general consensus is the ad is distasteful and wrong, but there has also been a lot of support of the ad. Many claim it’s simply the truth, and we should be able to use the tragedy in a positive way. We would really like to hear what you think, distasteful, effective, or both?

I think outside of America the ad speaks volumes that there are far greater tragedies happening in the world, but it still doesn’t sit well here in the U.S., still gives me goose bumps.

This ad is extremely distasteful and inconsiderate. Its a cheap ploy to shock and awe the audience and have their message spread through word of mouth, which i am even sickened to be a part of right now. While i understand the message they were trying to convey, there are many more tactful ways they could have went about it. To follow through on the making of this ad shows a lack of creativity at best and a lack of morals and good judgement at worst. It is obvious whoever made this ad didnt stop and think how many lives were deeply effected on that day and how those images are still ingrained in our minds. I myself lost a family member that day. My Uncle was a firefighter that sacrificed his life to save others. I consider him to be my hero. It is no coincidence that this pops up one week before the 8th anniversary of that day either. This ad disgusts me and I feel it disrespects his legacy along with all the other brave and innocent souls that were in those towers and planes. That day was a tragic one. It is a day that changed America. Changed the world. And changed the daily life of many American families. Not a fucking marketing tactic. So in closing, Im going to take the high road when I say, FUCK WWF! Im gonna go punch a panda.

At first glance of this ad, I thought a few things. I thought, god what a cheap way to make a point. What a distastful attempt at trying to drive home the point that the world is a powerful place, and can turn on us at any second. That thought then turned to rage, and I realized why I seriously cant stand all these hippy tree hugging vegans. While I do agree that Americans have a hard time putting tragedies in a global perspective, this was an act of terror that will forever be burned in the memories of those who were apart of it. I for one will also be spending my labor day weekend cutting down trees, doing burn outs in wheat fields, capturing rare insects, setting booby traps all over the woods by my house, and finishing my Diddy jumpsuit made strickly from bald eagle fur.

Is a commercial not supposed to advertise their cause and purpose? What did this have to do with the World Wildlife Federation? Did it get my attention, yes, but for all the wrong reasons. I see their point and the connection but what a disgusting way to portray it. This is a prime example of the insensitivity that some people can have, and the fact that this made it all the way into a newspaper is crazy to me! I can’t imagine being one of the people who lost someone in this tragedy and having to watch this commercial.

Obviously these idiots made a point with the ad but these two events are not comparable at all. World trade was an attack from terrorist which was a well thought out plan that took 2 years to complete. A tsunami is a earthquake out at sea which is not controllable by any human on this earth, yes its horrible but unpreventable. Bottom line they probably did this quick and didn’t think about the difference of terrorism and natural disasters.

While I totally agree Preda, I think the point they are making is that the tsunami was caused by our polluting ways and we can prevent something from happening a thousand times worse than 9/11, but they are totally wrong because According to Wikipedia “Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions (detonations of nuclear devices at sea), landslides and other mass movements, bolide impacts, and other disturbances above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami. Due to the immense volumes of water and energy involved, the effects of tsunamis can be devastating.” so there is nothing humans can really do from preventing a tsunami, which results in this ad making no sense really.

3 words. over the top

and a tsunami is a natural disaster whereas 9/11 was created by man (terrorists)

so nevermind if this was impactful i think its contradictory, insensitive and just a horrible idea by the agency and wwf to even allow this idea to go beyond a storyboard into actual production. whether they intended ti run it or not they clearly put money into the production of this ad by showing mad planes roll up on NYC

so both parties should be held responsible
