My 2bed room Lower East Side apartment is doing me well right now, but after seeing this video, I might be upgrading and packing a bag for Singapore pretty soon. The Bishan Central Condominium Project in Singapore consists of two 38-story towers consisting of 500 apartments in total. The two towers are connected via three bridges, two of which are covered with trees and shrubbery. The third bridge sits at the top of the structure and is a fully functional open-air swimming pool.

In 2005, third-grade-teacher Eric Schneider bought as big as an apartment as he could afford in Manhattan. He paid $235,000 for a 450-square-foot studio with a tiny kitchen. Then he let architects Michael Chen and Kari Anderson of Normal Projects design a way to pack more density into his small space. The Normal Projects architects called their creation the Unfolding Apartment, though given Schneider’s affinity for the Japanese sense of space (he spent his first year post-college living and teaching in Japan), it could as easily be called the Origami Apartment. In total, Schneider spent $70,000 total remodeling his new apartment and this includes not just the cabinet, but the bathroom renovation, all cabinetry, kitchen appliances, furniture and dishes. This apartment really is pretty amazing, but for 300g’s total at the end of the day? I dont know about that.

This is one of the most extreme residential sites I have seen, hands down. Sadly there is no images of the actual house inside yet, but these aerial pictures of the site is truly remarkable. It’s owned by architect Charles Sieger (of Sieger Suarez), who has designed over $10 billion in real estate properties. Yes there is a working moat with a fully functional bridge, to keep zombies out of course. I have also included a video to Birdman’s music video Fire Flame, why? Because the opening scene is a walk through the main doors and over the moat into the house you see here, sweeeeeeeeeeeeet, fire flame SPITTAAAAA.

Sexy new building up in the New York Skyline formally known as ‘beekman tower’. It is the
tallest residential tower in the western hemisphere designed by one of the best architects to ever live, Frank Gehry. He has always been one of my favorite architects even though I heard he really doesn’t do anything on the projects, he just approves things, which in my time in architecture noticed that is the normal once you become the boss, and that ladies and gentlemen is boss.

I should just start naming crib of the week, Guz architecture residence of the week, because this is the third time I have picked a house from the amazing architecture firm based out of Singapore. This week we are gong to dive into the Cluny house, bringing the rainforest into your home (click images to enlarge to really see the detail of the residence.). Description from Guz Architects:

The project demonstrates how technology, planning and design can be applied sensitively to generate a comfortable, luxurious, yet sustainable family home.

Photovoltaic cells and solar water heaters are employed together with design for passive cooling and cross ventilation to reduce energy usage. Irrigation tanks and roof gardens collect and recycle rainwater; and the use of materials such as recycled teak and artificial timber adds warmth without compromising the finite resources of our environment.

The house is laid out around a central water court that forms the focal point of the project. Lushly planted roof gardens surround this and add to the effect that nature is evident in every part of the house.

Although the house is high tech – using state of the art EIB systems, photovoltaic cells, security systems – these are integrated discreetly and work with the natural environment of the house rather than against it.

This integration of technology and nature deserves special mention in a compelling design that could realistically become the model for sustainable living.

Talk about a green building. The Meera house, design by Guz Architects, portrays an image of rolling greens and blue waters inside and out. Not only is this house remarkable aesthetically to the eye, but it is also environmentally pleasing to the Earth, due to the green architecture incorporated. Of course the design is great and all that but how many people have had the fantasy of being at a party and there is human mermaids swimming behind a glass wall, well this house has that.

Description from the architects:

This house is located on a new housing estate on the island of Sentosa adjacent to Singapore. The plots are not large and neighbouring buildings are built close to the sides of each house.

Thus our strategy was to build a solid wall to each side neighbor to provide privacy where possible, while creating a central light and stair well which would funnel the sea breeze through the centre of the building. The front and rear of the building meanwhile, terrace back allowing each storey to have visual or actual access to greenery.

The intention was to try to allow each roof garden provided a base for the storey above allowing the layered effect to make each storey feel like it was a single storey dwelling sitting in a garden…..as much as we could do in the close confines of sentosa island and with such a large building!!

When you think of artistic design and modern technology L.A. is usually a place at the forefront of each movement. Well this ultra awesome loft conversion is still proof that L.A. still has it. The main concept of this project was to add a little fabrication to the space, O.K. maybe a lot of fabrication. It is truly amazing though what some construction can do to a space bringing it to life with clean crisp curves and edges, and dividing the living areas in a fluid way. The people responsible for such a rad warehouse to loft conversion are Patrick Tighe architects. Not only were they able to come up with such a modern and mind blowing design, but it is also green-friendly which is really the astonishing part.

Much more of this amazing conversion found below

The 1400 square foot dwelling is located in an existing warehouse building in downtown Los Angeles. The live-work environment was designed for a creative professional. Two distinct entities are evident in the design. The angular geometry of the faceted stone clad monolith stands in contrast to the free flowing organic elliptical shaped room. Through these two pieces a dialogue begins to emerge. Harmony and conflict co-exist within the dichotomous dwelling.

The raised floor is sheathed with a system of translucent honeycomb panels that allow for the LED lighting system below to morph from one color to the next. The building materials used were chosen for their ability to absorb or reflect the ever-changing color palette of the light. The raised flooring transforms into the lounge seating area and the desk of the workstation. A spa area is provided in the residence. Stone steps rise to the platform base of the monolith. The raised deck houses an air-bath tub, natural light, a stylized garden and a floating steel fireplace complete the relaxation zone.

Undulating curved walls form the womb-like enclosure that serves as the kitchen. A 15’ long island of stainless steel houses the appliances and cabinets. The skin of the elliptical shaped room tears away revealing the bathroom concealed beyond. The walls are pierced with light sensitive tiles. The light portals absorb and redistribute the available light within the space providing another dimension within the environment. It is here where the overhead cantilevered stone appendage penetrates the embryonic form. The two distinct entities compliment, contrast, violate and coalesce one another as they become one.

Technology is an integral part of the design in two ways,
1.) Technology is used to control the environment. The inhabitants have the ability to alter the mood of the space in a number of ways via a central control station. Lighting, music, security, heating – air conditioning and the display of the media wall are all programmed as part of the user interface. The media wall (a wall tiled with cinema display monitors) serves as an extension of the computer’s desktop. The wall is a screen for viewing films and for gaming. The media wall also serves as a virtual art gallery, displaying the occupant’s photography collection.

2.) Technology was used to design and fabricate the residence. The forms were produced via a computer model and fabricated using a CNC (computer numerically controlled) milling process. 65 plywood ribs (14′ high) were placed 12″ apart as an armature to which thin layers of gypsum wallboard and plaster were affixed to form the complex curves of the walls.
