Living In a Shoebox, In Style

In 2005, third-grade-teacher Eric Schneider bought as big as an apartment as he could afford in Manhattan. He paid $235,000 for a 450-square-foot studio with a tiny kitchen. Then he let architects Michael Chen and Kari Anderson of Normal Projects design a way to pack more density into his small space. The Normal Projects architects called their creation the Unfolding Apartment, though given Schneider’s affinity for the Japanese sense of space (he spent his first year post-college living and teaching in Japan), it could as easily be called the Origami Apartment. In total, Schneider spent $70,000 total remodeling his new apartment and this includes not just the cabinet, but the bathroom renovation, all cabinetry, kitchen appliances, furniture and dishes. This apartment really is pretty amazing, but for 300g’s total at the end of the day? I dont know about that.

Poster Boy Occupies The Wall Street Stop

09 Nov 2011, written by Riz 0 Comments

Our favorite rebel subway street artist Poster Boy references the late Gil Scott Heron in a shout-out to Occupy Wall Street at the Wall Street stop off the F line. I guess his couple of arrests and time spent at Rikers for graffiti isnt going to quiet his voice in this whole Occupy Wall Street movement.

“America was a bastard the illegitimate daughter of the mother country whose legs were then spread around the world and a rapist known as freedom, free doom.” -Gil Scott Heron

How Did The World Get to 7 Billion People?

01 Nov 2011, written by Riz 0 Comments

Here’s a helpful little video tutorial from NPR which demonstrates how just in the 200 years the world totally went of the deep end and grew from one to seven billion people, all illustrated by pretty beakers of happily hued water. Drip drip births. Drip drip deaths, and then not so much.

Art is Where The People Are

What was once a ramshackle, burnt out Victorian warehouse is now the gigantic Village Underground gallery, complete with mural walls and artist studios inside tube train cars on the roof. Want to help turn it inside out with Kickstarter? As always, there’s schwag. Your money will take the exterior of the gallery “to the next level” by installing huge glass screens so canvases and la-a-a-arge format digital works and photographs can be exhibited in front of 1.5 million monthly passerby and passing commuters. Pledge $50 and you’ll get your name on a brick in there.

The Walken Dead

18 Oct 2011, written by Riz 0 Comments

Zombies have really been on the up swing in the last couple of years, so its really no surprise that someone has finally made a Christopher Walken tribute video titled The Walken Dead.

Watch as zombies from all walks of life recite famous Walken one-liners and stumble around town, they get more and more weird. Personally, we think this is great. Even through the whole idea of impersonating Walken is kind of played out, its still entertaining and funny.
