There is a point in everyones life we they try to identify with a counter-culture, try to rebel against the norms and what society tries to make them. Whether it’s hating authority, loving bob marley, living reckless, a tiny tattoo or the way your dress. Everyone has some form of expression to take their shot at saying “I’m different!” “I do what I want!” There are few groups in the US that take this to limit, individuals do all the time, but not groups. The religious compounds maybe, but they live by a gods rules. The hippie communes of 60′s perhaps, but even they followed guidelines of love and a respect for nature. Or maybe the “off the grid” people living out the desert. Either way there is a fascination and near respect for those willing to truly rebel and show zero care for what others think of them. If there wasn’t we all wouldn’t have our own little acts of rebellion. A group of people like this is mesmerizing. The White clan of West Virginia is the true family of the counter culture, living lawlessly with a devotion to each other and no care for outsiders. “The Wild and Wonderful Whites” is a documentary released in May 2010 by Dickhouse Productions that follows the clan in their home Boone County WV for a year. Shoot-outs, robberies, gas-huffing , drug dealing, pill popping, murders, and tap dancing – what do these all have in common? These are just a few of the parts of being a member of the Wild and Wonderful White Family. If you think your standing apart from the world with your tattoo or your 80′s t-shirt this doc will put things in perspective.
